Shivali was born in a small town in India, but grew up in the big city, where she did her Bachelor's. As a part of her Bachelor's project, she worked on the DNA binding and DNA cleavage properties of transition metal complexes in the lab of Dr. Anupa Kumbhar. She obtained her Master's degree from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Prof. Mahendra Sonawane's lab. For her master's thesis, she worked on the interplay between polarity and adhesion in the zebrafish epidermis. Thereafter, deciding that she quite liked the zebrafish model, she decided to join the Vastenhouw lab at UNIL to delve deeper into the zebrafish cells - this time into the nucleus.

When not in the lab, she likes to read, listen to music, interact socially with domestic animals, watch webseries and eat dessert.
